In the summer of 1960 Paul Oliver came to the United States with the aid of a State Department grant and BBC field recorder with the idea, as he writes of putting on tape the conversation and music of blues artists in the country and the cities, from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes. Paul Hereford Oliver MBE 25 May 1927 15 August 2017 was a British architectural historian and writer and researcher on blues and other forms of African-American music. He was a leading authority on blues. His studies of American traditional music did much to spread interest in blues, and included early research into the influence of Islamic music from North Africa on its origins. Produced from tapes made on a heroic field trip by Paul and Valerie Oliver, accompanied part of the way by Arhoolie's Chris Strachwitz, the work is important for several reasons.
