Working my way backwards to this hazy release, it’s still as wasted as Living On The Other Side, deeply rooted with gentle evenhanded homespun neo-psychedelic meets alternative country meanderings that harken back to times gone by … hippie music for the 21st century in a parallel universe. Yet even so, the band is not locked into the late 60’s or even the early 70’s, where they use the sounds from those decades as a portal, though which they envision their own take on those influences.

Even with their earnest melodic tunes, the Donkeys are devoid of any pretense, coming across as entirely loose with an air of spaced out countrified soulfulness that goes down easy, riding comfortably in your back pocket. Each song is a delightful pleasant ride, an album filled with lackadaisical bluesy licks and proficient harmonies, a quiet journey, all designed with the intention of wasting away a warm summer afternoon.

A number of the tracks are simply irresistible, numbers such as “New Blue Stockings,” though is rather frustrating at a mere ninety-seven seconds. Of course “Ceiling Tan” (yes, that’s correct) makes up for that teaser, as do most of the others, with expansive grooves and a downtempo moodiness that’s just so charming, you’ll be longing for more. Then there are the two ‘Raga’ tracks, “East Coast Raga” and West Coast Raga,” laced with twangy sitar movements that oddly don’t feel out of place and act as a connecting theme, balancing both sides of this record flawlessly, again, combining what was familiar with what’s new.

The Donkeys have been flying under the mainstream radar, with far too few availing themselves of the stellar musicianship and narrative lyrical ease, all delivered with sparking insight, yet without pushing the envelope, certainly suitable for hearing on a crackly radio in a battered convertible Beetle while driving to the beach. Of course others might just as easily say that Born With Stripes has been made by mystic slackers who have no fear of looking backwards for their inspiration … to which I would add, that when they come out the other side, they’re a sonically attractive band who know how to mix comfort and music effortlessly.
