Oh Orpheus sings Oh tall tree in the ear And all things hushed. Yet even in that silence a new beginning, beckoning, change appeared. Creatures of stillness crowded from the bright unbound forest, out of their lairs and nests and it was not from any dullness, not from fear, that they were so quiet in themselves, but from just listening. Bellow, roar, shriek seemed small inside their hearts. And where there had been at most a makeshift hut to receive the music, a shelter nailed up out of their darkest longing, with an entryway that shuddered in the wind- you built a temple deep inside their. Roman Candle is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith. It was recorded in late 1993 and released on July 14, 1994 by record label Cavity Search. Pitchfork has described the album's style as lo-fi folk. Roman Candle was recorded and released while Smith was still in Heatmiser. According to Benjamin Nugent's biography Elliott Smith and the Big Nothing, Smith recorded the album in the basement of the home of then-girlfriend and Heatmiser manager J. The Matheny family from Chapel Hill offers another album of power pop-infused alternative country songs with Oh Tall Tree in the Ear. As on Roman Candle's previous releases, Skip Matheny sings passionately about romance, heartbreak, and life on the road while his wife, Timshel, riffs away on guitar and brother Logan attacks or cuddles the drums as appropriate. The album title comes from poet Rainer Maria Rilkes Sonnets To Orpheus, which heralds the mythical power of music. But these songs are no aloof literary exercise. The Chapel Hill-based band apply imagination to their roots-rock songs take dynamic courses, melodies pop, electronic noise almost too much of it at times gives the proceedings a modern feel, and Skip sings with coiled, punchy energy. Big Light and Heartbeat make it clear that they want to feel something, and they dont want do it alone. In the long haul, that promise made with these 13 songs has been fulfilled over and over again. I'm listening to Oh Tall Tree in the Ear pretty much whenever I'm in the car. It makes me happy and nostalgic at the same time and honestly gives me hope, which is rare for a record. I haven't had that goosebumps when I listen to a record thing in awhile. Honestly, if you have been a fan of music and have been listeningfollowing trends, you may have noticed that a lot of records are just missing that special something. I often refer to it as the best unknown album of 2006. I don't know how it is not already in every music collection. Songwriting and musicianship are incredible
