While growing up in Des Moines, Iowa, Oatts gained an interest in music from his father, Jack Oatts, who was a saxophonist himself and a respected music educator in the Midwest. After high school, Oatts attended Drake University for one year before dropping out and moving to Minneapolis to begin a career in music in 1972. In 1977, he was called by Thad Jones to join The Thad Jones. Bass Jay Anderson Drums Jeff Hirshfield Piano Garry Dial Saxophone Dick Oatts. About this release. Digital Music Products, Inc. CD-495US. Yes, the songs are by Cole Porter, but they treat his songs the way Coleman Hawkins treated Body & Soul. The songs are a structure to present improvisational ideas. I think Dick Oatts is a competant player and has a great tone. However, Garry Dial is the treat here. He is a great player. How the public has missed him is beyond me. Dick Oatts - Use Your Imagination 2017 Jazz critic Owen Cordle once described Dick Oatts as an uncompromising jazz musician, one who possesses monster chops without trumpeting them. Dick Oatts has, since his move to NYC in the late 70s, been one of the most sought-after soloists on alto sax on both the NY scene and the international stage.
