Sunday at the Village Vanguard is the initial volume of a mammoth recording session by the Bill Evans Trio, from June 25, 1961 at New York's Village Vanguard documenting Evans' first trio with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian. Its companion volume is Waltz for Debby. This trio is still widely regarded as his finest, largely because of the symbiotic interplay between its members. Bill Evans wrote in the liner notes for the album: Im hoping the trio will grow in the direction of simultaneous improvisation rather than just one guy blowing followed by another guy blowing. After the release of their debut album the trio went on a coast to coast tour during the first months of 1960. It was the first trio tour for Bill Evans and it included an engagement at Birdland in support of the Count Basie band. I remember playing in the Village Vanguard with Bill and Scott LaFaro with only 4 people in the club, and talking to Max Gordon and saying, Hey, man, can we go home theres only four people, and he says, Oh, no, youve still got a table of people and youve got to play another set. Evans' focus in this trio was jazz standards and original compositions, with an emphasis on interplay among the band members that often bordered on collective improvisation and blurred the line between soloist and accompanist. This trio recorded four albums: Portrait in Jazz 1959, Explorations, Sunday at the Village Vanguard, and Waltz for Debby all recorded in 1961. The latter two albums are l read more. One of the most famous and influential jazz pianists of the 20th century, Bill Evans formed the acclaimed piano trio in 1959, along with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian

The sound on this Orpheum pressing is so good I'm not sure I'll continue to seek out an OG copy.
I love my Orpheum copy of this...Evans is sublime yet Motian and LeFaro are on point.
